Kaali Tavern is on the island of Saaremaa, just 150 metres from the world-famous Kaali meteorite crater.
We offer a range of dishes incorporating both national and contemporary cuisine. Our signature dish – wild boar – is certainly worth trying!
During our ten years of operating we have helped organise weddings, birthdays and other family and corporate events.
We offer local beer brewed at Pihtla farm. It’s the best beer on the island!
You can buy souvenirs made from juniper and stunning Saaremaa dolomite from our old horse carts.
We are open every day in summer from 11:00 to 18:00.
At other times of year bookings must be made in advance.
Our history
If only these walls could talk... On moonlit summer nights the tavern’s staircases and ceilings speak a language all their own. The building recounts its own history: from its birth in the 18th century as the drying house for the local estate through periods when it operated as a creamery and workshop to its eventual demise, when all that was left of its splendid façade was its thick walls and empty windows, its roof having caved in.
However, new life was breathed into the village of Kaali in the 1990s. Restoration work began on the building in 1998, and a year later Kaali Tavern proudly opened its doors. Every attempt was made to preserve what was unique and timeless about the building. Traditional building materials were favoured: locally felled spruce, for example, props up the ceiling on the first floor; the floor of the tavern, its window sills and other features are made from dolomite mined in four different quarries on the island; the roof is made from local aspen, which lasts for decades despite its fragility; and the ironwork furniture on the second floor is truly unique, designed and made by hand by Saaremaa masters.
When the spirit of the building glides down the timber staircase on those moonlit summer nights, it must be satisfied with what it sees – the tavern is in very good hands!
